Onda Lifting in Korea: Is Microwave Lifting Right for Your Face? — Dr. Min Jeong
A quick hello before we begin
Hi, I'm Dr. Min Jeong, director of REDI Dermatology in Seoul. "Onda lifting" is one of the treatments international patients ask me about most often — usually because they've read that it's "painless" and "no downtime," and they want to know if that's actually true and whether it will do anything for their face. It can, but only if it's matched to the right concern. Please read to the end, because the most important part of this article isn't how Onda works — it's knowing whether Onda is the right choice for you in the first place.
What Onda lifting actually is
Onda is a non-surgical lifting treatment that uses patented microwave technology (Coolwaves) to deliver heat energy in a way that older lifting devices couldn't. Instead of the megahertz frequencies used by conventional radiofrequency (RF) lifting, Onda works at much higher microwave frequencies to selectively heat the deeper fat layer and the dermis.
Because microwaves preferentially heat tissue that holds water, Onda can carry stronger heat energy into deeper layers. In practice, only a small portion of that heat reaches the skin surface — and that surface is protected by strong cooling during the treatment — while the majority is delivered where we actually want it. That's the mechanism behind its reputation for firming and contour refinement without the strong burning sensation some people expect from lifting.

The "painless" reputation — is it real?
Largely, yes, and this genuinely surprises people. Onda tends to have low pain and minimal downtime, and many patients don't even need numbing. When we first tested Onda in the clinic, the most common reaction was the opposite of what you'd expect — people would ask, "Is it even on? All I feel is cold." That cooling sensation on the surface is the skin being protected while the deeper energy does its work.
I mention this partly to set realistic expectations in both directions. Some patients equate pain with effectiveness and worry that "no pain means no result." That isn't how Onda works — the effect comes from targeted deep heat, not from surface discomfort.
The single most important question: is your concern fat or firmness?
This is where I want to be very direct, because it's the difference between a satisfying result and disappointment. Onda's core target is the fat layer. That makes it well suited for refining sagging that comes together with localized volume — a double chin, fuller lower cheeks, a softening jawline where there's some excess to reduce.
But if your face is already slim and your concern is purely loss of firmness or elasticity, a fat-targeting approach isn't the right tool on its own. In that situation I'd more likely look at a device that works on the dermis and deeper support layer — for example a firming platform like Alltite, which uses RF microneedling to stimulate the dermis and SMAS. The wrong match is how people end up feeling a treatment "didn't work," even when the device itself is excellent.
In my consultations I often see both concerns in the same face — some excess volume in one area, laxity in another. In those cases I don't insist on a single device. A combination approach — reducing volume where it's excessive and firming where the skin has lost tone — is frequently the more sensible plan. But that decision belongs in the exam room, after I've assessed your skin thickness, degree of laxity, and where your volume actually sits.

What to expect, session by session
A single Onda session can show an effect, and for many people the treatment feels quick — around 30 minutes depending on the area. It can be applied to both the face and body, tailored by area and goal.
That said, I'll be honest about a point I make in the clinic too: microwave and RF lifting are not one-and-done "magic erasers." If you've done a trial session and confirmed the comfort and the direction of the result, a series usually reveals the fuller benefit rather than a single visit. If your goal is a strong single-session lift instead, ultrasound-based options like Ultherapy Prime or an RF platform such as Density may be a better conversation. As always, results vary by individual.
A downtime calendar for international patients
For those flying in, this is usually the most practical concern, so here's a realistic timeline:
- Day 0 (treatment day): Onda has little to no downtime. Any mild redness or warmth typically eases quickly, and most people can carry on with their day.
- Day 1–2: Skin generally feels normal. This low-downtime profile is one reason Onda suits patients on short trips.
- Week 1 onward: Firming and contour refinement develop gradually as collagen rebuilds, so the change settles in over the following weeks rather than appearing all at once.
Because there's minimal recovery to plan around, Onda is one of the more travel-friendly treatments we offer — but I still recommend leaving a consultation window on arrival so we can confirm the plan is right for your face before we treat.

Being treated far from home — how we support you
At REDI, our approach is diagnosis-first: I meet you at consultation, assess your skin, and — as a board-certified dermatologist — I perform the treatment myself, rather than handing you off. We have English- and Chinese-speaking interpreters on site, and you can start a video consultation with us over WhatsApp before you ever book a flight, so nothing is decided blind.
We also offer airport pickup, and once you're back home you're not on your own — we provide online aftercare follow-up so you can reach us if you have any questions as your results settle. Onda is an elective, non-insured aesthetic treatment, and we discuss pricing transparently at your consultation rather than quoting numbers before I've seen your skin.
One more note on tone: my aim is always a subtle, natural result — refined contour, not an "overdone" look.
Takeaways
- Onda lifting uses patented microwave (Coolwaves) technology to deliver deep heat to fat and the dermis, with low pain and little to no downtime.
- Its core strength is refining sagging that comes with localized volume — a double chin, fuller cheeks, a softening jawline.
- If your concern is purely loss of firmness on a slim face, Onda alone isn't the right match; a firming device or a combination plan may suit you better.
- It's not a single-visit miracle — a series usually shows the fuller benefit, and results settle gradually. Results vary by individual.
- We assess your face first, then design the plan — with interpreters on site, pre-trip video consultation, airport pickup, and remote aftercare for international patients.
If you'd like me to look at your face and tell you honestly whether Onda is the right choice — or whether something else would serve you better — send us a message and mention you read this blog. Your first online video consultation is free.
Frequently asked
How does Onda lifting work?
Onda uses patented microwave (Coolwaves) technology to deliver heat energy in a way older devices could not, selectively warming deeper fat and the dermis to help refine the contour and firmness.
Is Onda lifting painful, and is there downtime?
Onda tends to have low pain and little to no downtime, so it feels comfortable during treatment and you can generally return to daily life the same day. Sensation still varies by individual.
Who is Onda lifting best suited for?
In my practice, Onda tends to suit people who want to refine sagging together with localized volume — for example a softening jawline with fuller cheeks or a double chin. If your main concern is loss of firmness on a slimmer face, a different device may fit better.
Can Onda be combined with other lifting treatments?
Yes. I often pair Onda for areas with excess volume with a firming device such as Alltite for laxity, but the right combination is decided after diagnosis. Results vary by individual.
How many Onda sessions will I need?
A single session can show effect, but for these microwave and RF lifts I usually advise a series to see the full benefit. We plan the number of sessions after assessing your skin.
